CogLearn
This week our staff relished the opportunity to work with Elizabeth Gorrie, a COGLearn coach.
COGlearn was founded in 2016 with the mission to utilise proven scientific methods from cognitive psychology and evidence-informed programs and practice to improve student learning.
COGlearn specialises in on-site and remote support and coaching for school leaders and educators. Their instructional model is called Cognitive Based Instruction (C-BI). C-BI is based on the cognitive science of learning.
Elizabeth worked with the staff to support our Direct and Explicit Instruction programs. Our professional learning relationship with COGLearn is funded and supported by the Catholic Education Office and will continue throughout 2022.
COVID-19 Restrictions Update
The following outlines changes to the CECG SAFE RETURN TO SCHOOL NSW ROADMAP Term 1, updated 16 February 2022.
Assemblies
School Assemblies may occur. When bringing together large groups or multiple cohorts of students only (no parents):
- They can only occur outdoors
- Consider seating plans or separated areas to minimise mingling.
- Minimise the length of interaction between cohorts where possible.
- Maintain physical distancing.
- Encourage masks outdoors if physical distancing isn’t possible.
- Provide hygiene supplies (such as sanitiser) and encourage use.
- Only be conducted where it is appropriate given the number of cohorts with positive cases.
Masses and Liturgical Celebrations
As assemblies can only occur outside, this would be the same for whole school masses following the same conditions above. Mass or liturgical celebrations for a single cohort can take place but would not include parents or visitors following that non-essential visitors are still not allowed on school sites.
Dancing
- Choose well-ventilated or outdoor venues.
- Check the attendee numbers for indoor venues support physical distancing and ventilation requirements.
- Maintain student cohorts where possible.
- Consider reducing the period of high energy dancing to less than 30 minutes to minimise transmission risk. Alternatively consider allowing for an exchange of air every 30 minutes.
- Wear masks indoors when not dancing and consider the use of masks if physical distancing is not possible and contact is sustained, such as where dancing in partners.
Drama
- Choose well-ventilated or outdoor venues.
- Check the attendee numbers for indoor venues support physical distancing and ventilation requirements.
- Maintain student cohorts where possible.
- Some mixing of cohorts will occur as part of ensemble programs.
Excursions
- Excursions, including overnight excursions, are permitted.
- Excursions, especially overnight, should not be considered when there is evidence of COVID cases within the cohort/school community
- Destinations must be well ventilated or outdoor
- Excursions must be cohort-based
- Sole use of facilities to be maintained or no mixing with groups outside the cohort
- Consider RAT tests to be utilised before departure
- Overnight Excursions:
- Record attendance of each group in shared cabins/rooms
- RAT tests to be considered at intervals before and during excursion (eg every 3 days)
- Anyone displaying symptoms must be tested
- Contingency plans to be developed prior to departure should a student test positive
Excursion permission notes must now include this clause: I acknowledge that this event/activity is required to be held in accordance with any current NSW Health COVID-19 Public Health Orders and the <insert school> policies and procedures. I acknowledge and accept that there is a risk that my child may be exposed to COVID-19 whilst attending and participating in this event. I confirm that my child will not attend if displaying any symptoms of illness, and/or if directed to isolate under public health orders. I confirm I will collect my child/or make suitable arrangements should it be identified my child has COVID symptoms or tests positive to COVID whilst attending the excursion.
Instruments
- Choose well ventilated or outdoor areas
- Maintain physical distancing and cohorts
- Do not share instruments played with the mouth
Visitors
- Non-essential visitors are not permitted on school sites.
- Allied health professionals, essential infrastructure workers and maintenance crews are permitted.
- Parents may attend the school to: -
- Pick up sick children
- Attend the front office
- Attend the uniform shop
- Attend critical meetings with the Principal or staff at the school’s request
Thank you for working with us to ensure the restrictions are followed.
Crookwell Show BBQ
I would like to thank the Parents and Friends Association, Craig and Elise Croker, Brendan and Allison Hewitt, Rechell Naughton, Daniel Walsh and every parent and carer who assisted with the hugely successful Crookwell Show BBQ fundraiser last weekend. The fundraiser was a massive success with an estimated $3000 profit - what a wonderful achievement!
This fundraising event of the year is the only event that requires all hands on deck. It is a great way for our new families to get to know our existing families and also a wonderful chance for us to support our local community whilst building our school community at the same time.
The Parents and Friends (P & F) Association AGM and Term One General Meeting will be held next Tuesday evening at 7 pm in the cafe at the Crookwell Services Club, all new and existing families are welcome to attend.
Country Women's Association
I would like to congratulate the Country Women's Association on their centenary celebrations this year. You may have seen the special tribute that St Mary's offered the CWA in the pavilion at the Crookwell Show. I would like to especially thank Mrs Sue Branson for her work on this poster.
Commonwealth Bank National Teaching Awards
The Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards are open to teachers and school leaders in all Australian schools until 27 March. Nominating an inspirational and dedicated teacher is a great way to recognise and celebrate their efforts. The nomination process is fast and simple and anyone in your community can nominate a teacher or teachers can self-nominate. The Catholic Education Office has encouraged all Principals to share this opportunity with our communities. Further information, including the steps for nomination, can be accessed via https://teachingawards.com.au/#about.

Crookwell Show- BBQ
A big thank you to Brendan and Ally Hewitt, Rechell Naughton and Craig and Elise Croker for their organisation of the Crookwell Show BBQ last weekend. We appreciate all the parents and carers who turned up for their shifts. Not only is it a great way to help, it is also a great way to meet other parents and families.
We raised approximately $3000, which is a fantastic effort!
Our AGM and Term 1 meeting will be held next Tuesday at the Crookwell Services Club. We encourage everyone to come along and see how the P&F works. We have quite a number of things in mind that the P&F would like to do this year which will help raise funds to benefit the children in their learning.

P&F President
Tuckshop Roster Term 1
Please note all volunteers must be double-vaccinated and will be asked for proof upon signing in.
Please note, there will be no over-the-counter sales to eliminate interaction with students to remain Covid safe.
If you cannot do your date, please organise your replacement yourself and advise Belinda of the update to ensure we have a correct copy of the roster.
Masks
As you know students are encouraged to wear masks to school. One of our very clever friends of St Mary's has made some St Mary's school masks in the girl's summer tunic fabric. If you would like one of these please contact Belinda in the Office. There are two varieties and they are suitable for boys, girls and adults. Masks will be $2 each as we would like to gift our generous helper some money back to cover her costs.

Making Jesus Real through RESPECT
We are made in God’s image. We each have a God-given dignity. Every one of us is precious and has the right to be valued, cared for and respected. Each of us also has the responsibility to respect others. No-one knew this better than Jesus. He was the first to tell humankind to love our neighbour. And he lived his life according to this. Every thought, word and deed reflected his love and respect for every single person, even his enemies.
Catholics believe human beings are not only made in God’s image but are made to be channels of god’s love with the help of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. They believe that Jesus works through people and creation to bring goodness and peace.
As a Catholic school, we look to Jesus as our model. We are His representatives, and our actions should reflect His values. We are to be the image of Jesus. We are to MAKE JESUS REAL to all those around us. Making Jesus Real is a way of life that allows students to see Jesus working in their lives through people and creation. It is about being a witness and sharing Jesus’ love with others.
This week we have been learning to MAKE JESUS REAL in our school by being W.E.S.T people
Respecting others by:

Separation Anxiety
It’s natural for your young child to feel worried when you say goodbye. In early childhood, crying, tantrums, or clinginess are healthy reactions to separation and a normal stage of development (1) A little worry over leaving mum or dad is normal, however some kids, experience separation anxiety that doesn’t go away, even with a parent’s best efforts. These children experience a continuation or reoccurrence of intense separation anxiety during their elementary (primary) school years or beyond. Both the intensity level and timing of separation anxiety vary tremendously from child to child, and their behaviour/response to separation will also vary. If separation anxiety is excessive enough to interfere with normal activities like school and friendships and lasts for months rather than days, it may be a sign of a larger problem. (2)
Tips to help
- Practice separation. Leave your child with a caregiver for brief periods and short distances at first. As your child gets used to separation, you can gradually leave for longer.
- Tell your child when you’re leaving and when you’ll be back. Your child might feel confused or upset when they realise you’re not around and might be harder to settle the next time you leave.
- Telling your child you will be back will also support your child to develop the confidence that they can handle the separation. (Remember: it’s important you return at the time you promised.)
- Develop a quick “goodbye” ritual. Rituals are reassuring and can be as simple as a special wave through the window or a goodbye kiss. Keep things quick, though, so you can:
- Leave without fanfare. Tell your child you are leaving and that you will return, then go—don’t stall or make it a bigger deal than it is.
- Keep a relaxed and happy look on your face when you’re leaving. If you seem worried or sad, your child might think the place isn’t safe and can get upset too. No matter how frustrated you feel, avoid criticising or being negative about your child’s difficulty with separation. For example, avoid saying things like ‘She’s such a mummy’s girl’ or ‘Don’t be such a baby'.
- Make a conscious effort to foster your child’s self-esteem by giving her lots of positive attention when she’s brave about being away from you.
REMEMBER You know your child best. If you’re worried about their separation anxiety, consider seeking professional help. Here are some places to start:
- your child’s teacher or the school counsellor
- your child’s GP or paediatrician, who will be able to refer you to an appropriate mental health practitioner
