ANZAC Day
It was wonderful to see over sixty St Mary’s students at the ANZAC Day Commemorative Service in Crookwell and fifteen in Taralga on Sunday. We also had students participate in the Dawn Service.
Our students and teachers marched proudly and listened respectfully, demonstrating wonderful community spirit.
Thank you to all the parents who brought their children to participate on Sunday. Thank you also to the staff that assisted.
Athletics Age Champions
Congratulations to our students on the achievement of 'Age Champion' at the 2021 School Athletics Carnival. More details in Mrs Rachael Croker's sports page.
The Northern Region Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 11 June. Information notes for qualifying students will be sent home soon.
Cross Country Carnival
Congratulations to the children who participated in the school Cross Country Carnival yesterday. Once again, I was very impressed with our student's effort and sportspersonship. We have had quite a few positive comments from parents, impressed by our senior student's leadership, encouragement of others and the way our whole school was inclusive in supporting each other.
Thank you to the parents and staff who helped on the day and to Rachael Croker for her thorough organisation of this successful event.
Uniform Matters
By the beginning of next week, all students should be wearing their full winter uniform.
In preparation for the cooler months, you might like to order our school coat, which is a warm bottle green parka style coat, from our Uniform Shop. No other coats will be permitted, however, bottle green gloves and beanies may be purchased elsewhere.
Some other reminders about our school uniform- hair accessories must be in the school colours only, earrings must be sleepers and studs and no nail polish is to be worn to school. Hair, both boys and girls, is to be tied back if it is longer than collar length.
Catholic Schools Week
Monday 3 to Friday 7 May, we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. We do this by offering service to others in our community. This year our Catholic Schools Week activities include a visit and tidy up at the Community Garden for Year 1 and Year 2, a visit to Crookwell SDN Pre-school for Kindergarten, the Legends Shield Gala Day Goulburn for nominated students in Years 3-6, a visit to the Crookwell Early Learning Centre by Year 4 and the launch of our St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal for Years 5 and 6. The week will conclude with the Northern Region Cross Country Carnival.
Throughout the week I will also conduct school tours. Please spread the word about our Open Week Tours. If you know someone who is interested in learning more about St Mary's, or who has a child ready to start Kindergarten in 2022, we welcome their visit. School tour bookings can be made by calling Belinda on 48321592.
Student Pick Up
The street directly out the front of St Mary’s is a Bus Zone from 8.30am-9.30am and 3.00pm-4.00pm. Please be aware that occasionally parents dropping their children off in the mornings in this bus zone have been fined by the police.
We recommend that in the afternoons if you have come to collect your children by car that you walk with your child to the crossing on Wade Street to cross safely out of the Bus Zone.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN
tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.
NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.
The NAPLAN Online assessment window starts on Tuesday 11 May and finishes on
Friday 21 May 2021. The tests must be taken in the following order:

Next week is CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR WORLD
Catholic Schools Week (CSW) is an annual celebration of Catholic education. This year, St Mary’s joins with 1755 Catholic schools across the country to celebrate 200 years of Catholic education in Australia.
Over 200 years, Catholic schools have grown to become the largest provider of schooling in Australia (outside government) with one in five school age students attending a Catholic school.
This represents 777,000. Nearly 40 per cent of Catholic schools are located outside of metropolitan cities in regional, rural and remote communities.
National theme
A national theme, “Faith in the future” has been developed for the 200 years celebrations. The theme reflects the core purpose of Catholic education to form students in their faith, and to provide an education that enables our graduates to make a meaningful contribution to the world. The theme reflects our commitment to build on the great work of those who have come before us, and to provide a Catholic education for future generations of students in a world that is rapidly changing and poses new challenges for Catholic school communities. Yet, we have faith that we can face these challenges and continue to build on, and strengthen our mission of Catholic education – to empower our students to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and actively strive to create a better world.
At Monday morning’s assembly, our Year 6 students will introduce Catholic Schools Week. They will remind us what it means to be part of a Catholic school.
OUR VISION STATEMENT
Jesus Christ calls us as an inclusive community to live our faith, engage in quality learning and enrich our world for the future.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Following in the footsteps of our founders, the Sisters of Mercy, Together As One we are:
- Jesus’ hands - offering SERVICE to others
- Jesus’ eyes - seeing the needs of others with COMPASSION
- Jesus’ heart -showing RESPECT for all creation
- Jesus’ feet - walking with others in the spirit of JUSTICE
- Jesus’ mind - persevering and striving for EXCELLENCE
Christ Has No Body
Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks with compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

Rugby League Legends Shield Gala Day
Unfortunately due to a lack on nominations, St Mary’s was unable to form a Year 5/6 team to compete on the day. We are hoping that 2022 will see us being able to enter both Year 5/6 and Year 3/4 teams, as this is a fabulous day to be a part of.
Good luck to the following Year 3 and 4 students who will be attending the Legends Shield Rugby League Gala Day on Tuesday May 4, at North Park in Goulburn, playing as the St Mary’s Year 3/4 team:

Cross Country
We were certainly blessed with fabulous weather for our Cross Country carnival on Wednesday making it perfect running conditions. Every year we are blown away by the participation and resilience the students show when running such long distances, and this year did not disappoint.
Many staff had conversations with students who were so proud of themselves for the following reasons:
- It was the first time they had participated in a Cross Country carnival
- It was the first year where they were able to run the entire track without stopping
- They finished their race and then went and encouraged their mates to keep going
- I found Mum a pine cone and raced with it
We as a staff always come back to school with such heart warming stories to share, and that is what participation is all about.
Congratulations to our super runners who finished in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. These certificates will be handed out at our Monday morning assembly next week.
The first 6 places in each race will now progress to the Northern Region Cross Country, held here in Crookwell next Friday. Forms for this will be handed out on Friday of this week.

Northern Region Cross Country
Next Friday 7 May, we are hosting the NR Cross Country at the Crookwell Showground. Competitors and their families from St Joseph’s Glbn, Ss Peter and Paul Glbn, St Bede’s Braidwood, Mt Carmel Yass and St Greg’s Qbyn will join us to compete for a spot in the Northern Region Team that will compete at the Archdiocesan Carnival at Mt Stromlo on Tues 25 May. This sporting event involves six competitors in each male and female age group from 9 yrs to 12yrs. Our school team will be created following our School Cross Country.
We are looking for your support on the day. Can you help man a checkpoint for all or some of the day? Can you help with set up and/or pack up? Can you assist in the Canteen? Can you help with recording or First Aid?
Any assistance will be appreciated. Feel free to leave a message with Belinda or contact me directly with any offers!

MacKillop Soccer
It was a beautiful day in Goulburn for the MacKillop Football trials last Friday and our C & G teams were equally impressive. All the team members played their hearts out and were very competitive. Well done to Ava Nicholson and Charlie Cramp for trialling.
Special congratulations goes out to Charlotte Holland (St Gregory's), Charlie Cramp (St Mary's, Crookwell), Lincoln Thompson (St Patrick's, Bega) and Sebastian Brademann (St Patrick's, Cooma) as they were selected to play in the Possible vs Probable game which placed them in the top players for the day.
Unfortunately Charlie did not make selection. We are super proud of the success level of both girls with this Sport trial.
