Swimming Carnival
A very big thank you to Mrs. Rachael Croker for coordinating another wonderful swimming carnival on Tuesday. Thank you to all our staff and parent helpers as well, without your help the carnival could not go ahead.
I am always pleased to see the students display excellent sportsmanship, congratulating each other after their races, even when the race has been tightly contested. I was also pleased to hear that some students achieved personal bests during the day.
One thing that also struck me was the way all students stretched themselves to compete in events and distances that they had never tried before. The encouragement they received from their fellow students, parents, and staff was something that made the day extremely special.
In the School Sport section in this newsletter, Rachael has included an article and photos.

Term One Staff Professional Learning
At St Mary's we encourage our staff to participate in regular and targeted Professional Learning. This allows our staff to maintain their professional teaching accreditation and ensures St Mary's staff are confident in providing the most current learning pedagogies.
This term the staff at St Mary's will commence our exploration of Explicit Instruction by working with Associate Professor Dr. Lorraine Hammond from Edith Cowan University. The leadership team will meet with Lorraine on 14 February, followed by school-based professional learning on 31 March and 1 April. We will also welcome teachers from St Anne's Temora and St Bernard's Batehaven for this exciting professional development opportunity.
This year Mrs. Cummins will continue her journey on the Early Career Teachers Program and Mrs. S Croker will continue as our Child Safety Advocate.
We will aim to keep you up to date with our staff Professional Learning as the year progresses.

School Swimming Carnival
How blessed we were with the weather for our carnival, perfect swimming conditions.
I would like to firstly commend the students for their behaviour, participation and team spirit during the carnival. How nice it was to see students challenging themselves and working hard to earn points for their house.
Thank you to the staff who worked tirelessly to ensure that the event ran smoothly.
Finally to our parent helpers, a very big thank you. Please know that the time you volunteer to assist with running such carnivals does not go unnoticed, without you all these days simply would not happen.
The winning house on the day was Aloysius, congratulations.
A reminder that Age Champion medallions will be presented at Monday’s School Assembly at 9.05am.

Intervention Program Volunteer Form
Morning Club
Following the success of Morning Club in 2019, it is available again each day from 8am-8.40am. It is an opportunity for children to arrive at school early when it is difficult for parents who need to be at work early or have appointments. This service is available for all children from K-6 and is held in the library. The children will be required to participate in quiet activities during this time, reading, writing, drawing, colouring, board games, card games, puzzles, ipad activities, homework tasks and/or computer tasks. Children may bring games to play and share if they wish. At 8.40am the children who attend will then go to the playground for morning supervision by a staff member. No student is to be in the playground unsupervised before 8.40am.
Personalised Plan Meetings
Each semester, and sometimes more often depending on student need, we hold scheduled Personalised Plan meetings for students with a disability or an additional need requiring intervention or adjustments. These meetings will occur in Week 4, February 17th and 18th. You will be advised by letter of the date and time next week, if your child requires a PP meeting.
Reading Levels/Home Reading
Learning to read is just like running, some children are quick but others take longer to reach the finish line! Eventually, they all arrive at their destination! Please don’t be alarmed if your child is reading at a level or two behind last year. It is normal for some young children to slip back in their reading over the long holiday break. They forget some of the skills they have learnt in class. With most children it doesn’t take too long and off they go again! It is very important that home readers are easy and fun for children. The instructional level is done at school and the independent level is for home. If your child brings home a book that is too hard for them, please let your child’s teacher know.
Library
All classes visit the library each week. Please ensure your child has a library bag in order to borrow.
Tuesday: Year 3, Year 5, Year 4
Wednesday: Kinder, Year 1, Year 2, Year 6
Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to cover books for the Library. Plastic covering is supplied and you are able to do this at home in your own time. If you are able to assist, please complete the form below and I will contact you. Thank you!
ICT
To have access to the Information and Communication Technologies at St Mary’s, children in Years 3-6 are requested to read and sign the Acceptable Use by Students Policy Form which will be sent home. Parents/Guardians please sign the Acknowledgement section and return to the Office.
