Compass Parent Portal
This week, via email, you received your login details and information to assist you with navigating the Compass Parent Portal. Another email will follow with a detailed information guide. Print log-in information will also go home this week for your records.
You can now book your Three-Way Conversation with your child's teacher. These will be held on Monday 13 - Tuesday 14 March. There will also be a Local Excursion consent form waiting for you to submit. Year Six families will also have a retreat excursion consent form to submit. To find this go to the 'Events' tab.
Please contact the school for assistance if you have any questions regarding your Compass Parent Portal.
Welcome Function
I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of the parents and students who attended our school's welcome function, Family Bingo Night, held last Friday night at the Crookwell Golf Club.
Seeing so many families come together and enjoy a fun-filled evening of bingo, laughter, and socialising was wonderful. I appreciate your enthusiastic participation and support, which made the event a tremendous success.
I would also like to express our gratitude to the Crookwell Golf Club for providing a fantastic venue and supporting our school community.
Three-Way Conversations and Interim Reports
You are invited to attend a ten-minute three-way (parent/student/teacher) conversation on Monday, 13 or Tuesday, 14 March. This conversation will allow you to discuss how your child has settled into the new school year, their social development and engagement with learning.
The teacher will also provide you with your child's Interim Report at this meeting. The Interim Report indicates your child's enjoyment and interest in learning new things, ability to ask and answer questions, perseverance with tasks, work habits, ability to avoid distractions, follow school rules and collaborate with others.
Students in Years One - Six are to attend the meeting with their parents. Kindergarten students are not required to be part of the interview process.
If you have any concerns before these Three-Way Conversations, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.
To book a time slot, log into the Compass Parent Portal, or call Belinda.
You will receive your child's Academic Report at the end of Term Two.
Local Excursion Consent
This year the Local Excursion Consent Form can be completed digitally on the Compass Parent Portal. This general consent form allows your child/children to take part in local excursions. Examples of a 'Local Excursion' could include going to the showground for our Cross Country Carnival or Todkill park for our Athletics Carnival, visiting the Senior Citizens centre, planting with Landcare at Kiamma Creek, and the like.
Crookwell Country Weekend
On Saturday, 18 March, we have been invited to participate in the Crookwell Country Weekend Street Parade.
So our students can be clearly seen, and to mitigate possible risks, we have decided to walk as a group in this parade rather than travel on the back of a truck.
Our parade theme will be 'Country Kids'. We ask that students come to the muster point at 9.30am wearing country-themed clothing, such as checked shirts, jeans, boots and cowboy hats. The parade commences at 10am, and the students will move down Goulburn Street to country music.
We encourage as many of our students to join in as possible. Further details will be given closer to the date.
Children's Crossing
Thank you to the parents who have been using our new pedestrian crossing to drop off or collect students. We request that you do not cross your child/ren in the Bus Zone. It is important to teach your children road safety practices.
Please feel free to use the School Drop-off Pick-up Zone in front of the Murphy Building (K/6 classrooms).

Respect- for our Environment
Tomorrow, St Mary’s will help to ‘Clean Up Australia.’ This annual event reminds us of our responsibility to respect God’s gift of creation. From the beginning of time, human beings have been tasked with being the ‘keepers of creation’.
‘So God created humankind in his image… God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’ (Book of Genesis, New Testament)
The words subdue and dominion, do NOT mean that humans have the right to overpower the earth for their own ends. The author of Genesis was referring to stewardship. Our planet is fragile and it is Humankind’s role to care for it.
The two Genesis stories of Creation are not historical, scientific truths but, rather, deep religious truths about God, the meaning and purpose of the cosmos and the role of humanity. They are Sacred Myths. God said… And God saw that it was GOOD’. Catholics believe that although the world was not created in six ‘24-hour days’, the creation stories reveal to us these divine and sacred truths:
- All of creation stems from an original act of God. God said ‘Let there be … light, day, night, sun, stars, moon, land, sea, nature, creatures and humankind…’
- God intended creation to be GOOD (‘And God saw that it was good’ – this phrase is repeated 6 times in Genesis 1)
- God placed the responsibility of managing it and caring for it on humankind.
Human beings are ‘made in God’s image’; and each one has a spirit, the capacity to love, a conscience and unbound intelligence. The Catholic Church teaches that all humans have a responsibility to the land and all living beings, including fellow humans.
Project Compassion
Please help us support the ‘least of our brothers and sisters’ this Lent by sending in money for our Project Compassion Boxes.
Please remember to give what you can to Project Compassion to help those who do not have enough to live life to the full. There is a Project Compassion box for donations in each classroom.

10 Questions to ask your child after a busy day at school.
It’s not always easy to get information from your child about how their school day was or how they really felt about how their day went. A typical after-school conversation might go a little something like this:
“How was your day?”
“Good.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing much.”
You continue on with your afternoon or evening with no further information than that, feeling frustrated or disappointed that your child doesn’t want to talk to you about school at all.If you’re tired of repeating this process each day with no change, it might be time to start thinking about some other questions to ask instead. Leading with a question that requires more than a simple yes or no is a great way to open a conversation and get your child talking about their day.
Try one or more of these 10 questions tomorrow and see how your child reacts:
- What was the best thing you did today?
- What was something different that happened today?
- What made you laugh?
- Who did you play with?
- What are you looking forward to about tomorrow?
- What did you learn about in music/PE/library?
- What’s something your teacher said to you today that made you think?
- If you could change one thing that happened today, what would it be?
- What part of your day went the slowest? Why?
- What games did you play at lunchtime?
Of course, if your child doesn’t want to talk about school, you should respect that too. Some children need a little space and time to relax after school before they are ready to talk about it and by giving them a little space, they might be more willing to open up later.
By asking meaningful questions and really listening to the answers you can get to know a lot about your child and how they are doing at school. It also creates a great connection between you, showing your child that you care about their wellbeing and are taking time to hear about how their day has gone.

Our Ears Can Be the Most Effective Tool in Emotional Regulation
One of the most common questions I get is, “how do I stop my child when they’re having a meltdown”. It is important to remember it should not be about ‘stopping’ the event. Once it has begun, no amount of distracting, compromising, yelling, or reprimanding will ‘fix’ the problem; the emotion needs to come out. But what we can do is Listen. This idea might sound silly but take a moment to reflect on how often you problem-solve rather than listen. When we try and jump in, we are preventing our child from independently problem-solving. Jumping in can also discourage our children from expressing their emotions as it may prompt them to think their feelings are invalid or, worse, feel unheard and alone.
By listening, we show our children that we are interested in what they say. When your child decides to talk to you about difficult emotions, just be present with them silently. It is a natural response to jump in with our own perceptions, emotions or ideas. However, this is not what they need. Our children need us to listen to their words and how they are talking, processing a situation, and feeling.
When there is a break, briefly summarise what you have heard from them. Reflecting back on your child's words makes them feel heard and understood. And even better, if you haven’t understood correctly, it gives them a chance to correct you and give you more information. For example, ‘I can tell that you’re feeling really upset because your brother broke your favourite toy, is that right?’
When children don’t feel listened to or understood, their behaviour can escalate into frustration, which is their way of trying to tell us that we don’t understand them and that they cannot communicate their emotions properly. However, when a child feels heard and understood, big emotions often start to calm. When our emotions calm, our ‘thinking brain’ finds it easier to kick back in (rather than our ‘emotional brain’), think rationally, and problem-solve conflicts.
SUMMARY
- LISTEN, LISTEN ,LISTEN
- Do not offer solutions. Our children will ask for advice when they need it.
- Listening to children empowers them, makes them feel safe, and shows them that they are not alone.
- Paraphrase what you have heard back to your child to confirm you have been listening and to clarify what you heard is correct.
- Listening helps children develop their own problem-solving skills, which helps develop their resilience.
- Listening to your child can prompt them to talk to you more often because their emotional needs are being met. On the flip side, they are less likely to do it again if they don’t feel that talking to you meets their emotional needs.

Luke McCue Memorial Cup
The annual Luke McCue Memorial Cup day began last year with the idea being to unite the Goulburn and Crookwell rugby communities and remember the tragic loss of young people from these communities. The day also aims to raise funds that can be accessed by players who are injured during the season.
All are welcome on the 18th March at Poidevin Oval in Goulburn, either as players or spectators. The program includes a junior game between Goulburn Fizzy Reds and Crookwell Pups, followed by a trial match between Goulburn Dirty Reds and Crookwell Dogs, then social rugby 7s rounds which are open to all codes of sport. Presentations to the winners will lead into live music, dinner stalls, raffles and auctions.
Click on the Facebook link for more details about the day and to register as a player.
