Parent Talk - Tips for Managing Your Child's Technology
Monday afternoon our school counsellor offered some excellent information about how to manage technology usage, safety and settings. This workshop gave practical tips on setting safe and healthy practices.
Unfortunately, no parents attended this workshop, however, the staff attended and picked up lots of tips.
Madi has included some information about the session in the Newsletter and the slide deck is available upon request.
Term 3 Value - Compassion
At nearly every morning assembly this term, the students have told me that we are striving for 'compassion' and I have been thrilled to hand out many School Spirit Awards to students who have been demonstrating that care through their daily actions.
As we near the end of the term, I would really like us all as a community to look after one another. There has been a succession of illnesses coupled with gloomy wet days. This has meant many play breaks inside. This can become draining on our students, staff and families both physically and mentally.
Jesus teaches us to 'Love one another' John 13:35. It's a lesson that, if practised, would solve all of our problems, big and little. We are called to see others with eyes of compassion, to imagine walking in the shoes of another before judging them and to view each situation through a loving lens. We need to realise that the only thing we can change is our actions, we cannot change others. When we do this, it is often pleasantly surprising to see the result.
Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child
Each year, St Mary's supports the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Box by asking for donations to help fill shoeboxes with various items such as gifts, clothes, something for school and hygiene products to send to children overseas.
If you are able to help with donating items, or money to assist with the postage of the boxes, please send these items in with your child.
Country Women's Association Donation
I would like to thank the Crookwell Country Women's Association for a generous donation of $350.00 We were very thankful to Francis Cromack who dropped up a cheque this week. As you know, the CWA, founded in Crookwell, are celebrating their centenary. The Women's Day magazine will be doing a feature on this and have recently been to Crookwell to interview the ladies and to take some photographs, including one of our Crookwell Show banner, designed by Mrs Branson.
Happy Fathers Day
I would like to wish our fathers, grandfathers and other significant male role models a very happy Father's Day on Sunday. Thank you for all you do to support your children on a daily basis.

Happy Fathers' Day
This coming Sunday is Father’s Day. It is a day to give thanks for the gift of fathers everywhere and the gift they bring to family.
God our Father, we give thanks and praise for fathers, young and old.
We pray for young fathers who are newly embracing their role.
May they find courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice.
We pray for fathers around the world whose children are lost and suffering.
May they know God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow.
We pray for men who are not fathers but who still mentor and guide us with fatherly advice.
We remember fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers who are no longer with us, but who continue to live in our memory, having nourished us with their love.
AMEN
Our Mother Mary’s Birthday - Thursday 8 September AND ST MARY’S SCHOOL FEAST DAY
Next Thursday we celebrate the Church feast of the birthday of the mother of God, Mary. Mary was the very first saint – the first follower of Jesus - from the moment she said “YES” to God’s request to become his mother on earth. As Jesus was dying on the cross, he made it clear that Mary is also our mother. The Bible records his last words to Mary: “When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, ‘Woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” John 19:26–27. Jesus established that Mary is the heavenly mother of all of humanity to whom can turn to for help.
On this special feast day, we give thanks for Mary (the patroness of our school and Parish).
We are all called to be saints, and so we ask Mary to pray for us that we may follow her example in better devoting our lives to God.
From MARY we learn to be…
HUMBLE – to listen to God and to surrender to God’s will and say “Yes”.
COURAGEOUS – when faced with tough times and decisions
TRUSTING - when all hope seems gone that God is with us and loves us
COMPASSIONATE - to go out of ourselves and reach out to others just as she did with Elizabeth
FAITHFUL - to love Jesus her Son and have faith that we are unconditionally loved and cherished
Our special Feast Day will begin with Mass at 9:30am. All are welcome to attend. Following Mass, the children will join together in stage groups to participate in a number of special activities to celebrate and honour Mary.
The children are asked to wear BLUE clothing to school next Thursday.

Technology Tips
Does your child sometimes get frustrated when screen time is over or when they can’t play a game they want to?
Here are some tips to help you manage technology use at home and avoid potential meltdowns:
- Set a clear time limit beforehand: Set a limit before they start. Make it clear what your expectations are at the start. If you are planning to give them one hour, communicate it; they may be sitting there thinking they have 6 hours. Also discuss the consequences of misbehaving.
- Give at least one warning before asking your child to come off technology. Use sound and visual aids to tell time eg. set an alarm on the device being used or use a separate device or timer (tv, google home, phone, oven, wind up timer). Children are often goal orientated with their activities, completing challenges or unlocking levels. This leads into the next step;
- Allow a natural break The end of an episode or stage of a game
- Have a transition activity planned and communicate this to your child e.g. after your finish on the iPad we will go to the park.
Please see the presentation slides attached for further information on how to utilise settings and functions on apple and android devices and for a brief summary of current social media platforms and how to help determine if your child is ready for social media.
For any further questions or discussions, please reach out to Madi on a Monday at Madelyn.burns@catholiccare.cg.org.au or by contacting the school office.
