COVID Update
Please remain vigilant with testing and hygiene procedures. We have seen an increase in school case numbers this week and are strongly encouraging all students to monitor for symptoms and sanitise regularly. There is a limited supply of RAT tests available that can be sent home upon request. We appreciate the rise in active cases is concerning and are asking for your cooperation to keep it under control. Please do not send any children to school with flu-like symptoms and alert the front office of any positive cases as soon as you can.
With the lack of available casual staff, there will be the need to split some classes over the next week. All students will be supervised and provided with relevant tasks. Work is also being prepared for any students who need to isolate at home. Please contact your child's teacher for material.
Mackillop Swimming
We were so excited this week to cheer on Harry Price at the NSWCPS (Mackillop) Swimming Championships. There were cheers and lots of clapping as we sat in front of the livestream to witness Harry place THIRD in his 50m MultiClass Freestyle race. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! We could tell the atmosphere poolside was electric and we were so pleased to see Harry supported by his Mum, Katie, as he swam.
This fabulous result now means that Harry has qualified as a member of the MACKILLOP Team and will compete at the NSWPSSA Swimming Championships at SOPAC on Monday 4 April.
CONGRATULATIONS HARRY!!
Tour de Cure!
Last Friday we gathered to cheer on and support the Tour de Cure as they left Crookwell on their second last day of cycling. St Mary's students had raised over $100 to donate to the Cure for Cancer fundraiser. Thank you Mrs. Rachael Croker for the insight and thought to support this worthwhile cause.
Showcase of Learning
This year we are pleased to be able to present our Stage 3 Showcase of Learning Assemblies. Our first assembly will be presented by Year Five and Six on the last day of term, Friday 8 April.
The parents and carers assembly will be held at 12.30pm. Please enter the Hall through the hall front doors, and sanitise before taking your seat.
No Hat, No Play
A reminder of our policy "No Hat, No Play". Please ensure your child has their hat packed in their bags so they are able to participate in playtime.
We've had an increasing number of students coming to ask for hats to borrow, however for health reasons, we do not like to share hats and they will no longer be given out as spares.
Uniform Reminder
Some other reminders about our school uniform- hair accessories must be in the school colours only, earrings must be sleepers and studs and no nail polish is to be worn to school.
Hair, for both boys and girls, is to be tied back if it is longer than collar length.
Girls should have white ankle socks, boys the school grey socks with the yellow band. Both boys and girls wear the school green socks with yellow band for sports days.
School Cross Country Carnival
Last Friday we were blessed with a beautiful day to run our School Cross Country. The event ran smoothly and efficiently with expert coordination and planning from Mrs. Rachael Croker.
Congratulations to those students who have placed within the first six in each age group (9-12yrs). They are now invited to be members of the St Mary's Cross Country team to compete at the Northern Region Carnival on Friday 29 April. Further details can be found in the Rep Sport section of this newsletter.
Team Members will be announced and presented with event information this Friday at our School Assembly. First, Second and Third place-getters will also receive their ribbons then.
Religious Education with Mrs. Skelly
‘The flutter of a wing, a rustling in the air, a voice, and the future began to begin’
Tomorrow (March 25) the Catholic Church celebrates the ‘Annunciation of the Lord’. This feast is a solemnity - a feast day of the highest rank celebrating a mystery of faith. It celebrates God’s angel (Gabriel) making the most important announcement in the history of the world, the announcement asking Mary to be the mother of God in Human form (Jesus).
Imagine the moment the angel Gabriel approached Mary, a young, lower class village girl with the words… “Greetings favoured one …You will conceive in your womb and bear a son… the son of the Most High… His kingdom will have no end”.
Mary must have been amazed and shocked. We know she was also troubled because she wasn’t yet married to Joseph (Pregnancy outside of wedlock was punishable by death for Jews in those days). Mary’s faith in God and God’s grace gave her the courage to say “…I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” [Lk 1:38]
Mary is the link between heaven and earth and is the very first Saint. God created us for union with Him and always wants be closer to us. Mary’s ‘YES’ is the reason God came to earth as Jesus to live among us and show us ‘the way’ to Him. We celebrate Christmas because of Mary’s ‘YES’.
God could have become human in any number of creative ways but chose to enter our world as we all do, by being born. In the same way, God exited the world through the door of death, as we all have to. This Church season of Lent and Easter reminds us about Jesus’ life and then His death on the cross, before His Resurrection and Ascension into heaven.
Mary’s ‘YES’ made all this possible. She said YES to God, but also to us, her future spiritual children. ‘My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed’ (blessed with the amazing honour of bearing our Lord) Through the birth, life and devastating death of her son Jesus, we today can truly know God.
Mary was in the midst of an ordinary day but attentive to God’s ongoing presence enough to recognise his voice in the angel Gabriel. And she was faithful and trusting enough to accept His invitation. God invites all of us to share in his life of love and puts before us every day a million different invitations. Maybe we should think about following Mary’s example, by setting aside a little time for quiet prayer and contemplation. We could try to be a little more aware of God’s presence when we pray, and in our day. God may have something to say to us too!
O Holy Mother Mary, we ask you to pray for us. That we may be attentive to God’s presence in our lives and His will for us. Amen.

Crookwell Community Fun Run
Tuckshop
Volunteers needed!
Tuckshop is a great way to get involved and contribute to St Mary’s and we are always in need of volunteers.
Once a term would be great – twice a term terrific! Mondays or Fridays – whichever suits you best.
Let us know if you would like to team up with someone in particular and we will put ‘newbies’ on with someone experienced.
Fridays are in particular need of volunteers as we really need 3 people to get the orders out on time. In the future, if we are unable to have 3 people on Fridays, we will be forced to cancel tuckshop for that day.
If you have any questions we are happy to help.
If you cannot do your date, please organise your replacement yourself and advise Belinda of the update to ensure we have a correct copy of the roster.
Introducing Mrs. Rachael Croker
I am a born and bred Crookwellian, having completed all of my schooling in town.
During my primary school years I was lucky enough to be taught by some very kind, nurturing and dedicated teachers. They helped me to develop a love for learning. This love for learning, as well as having quite a structured and organised lifestyle, made teaching the perfect career choice.
I completed my Bachelor of Education at Signadou in Canberra and my first teaching position was a composite K,1,2 class at Sacred Heart, Taralga. It was here that I had to learn to adapt quickly, and to be able to cater one lesson to suit a wide range of learning styles and abilities.
I spent three years teaching at Taralga, and then moved on to St. Joseph’s, Goulburn.
In 2006 I began my teaching here at St Mary’s, in what can be described as my dream job. We have the most dynamic staff, the students are wonderful, and the support that we receive from the wider community is second to none.
Life outside of school is very busy. I have three wonderful kiddies, who are very driven and are jumping continually from one sporting field to the next. We spend a lot of time together on hockey weekends and tournaments with our extended hockey families, and I love the friendships that are born from being a part of a team environment.
I enjoy holidays with my family, my weakness is sweet treats, and a good Netflix binge is a must.
My advice to my primary school self would be:
- Slow down, enjoy your childhood years
- Making mistakes is good, this is how you learn and grow
- Be a good person
- Try everything, you might just find your passion
- Ask questions and be curious
- Set goals for yourself
Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together.
