Classroom Support with Mrs Spackman
Anxiety
Anxiety CAN look like:
- Avoidance of new things/events/situations
- Needing things to be the same
- Insisting on the same rule/routines
- Rigidity
- Social Withdrawal
- Anger
- Meltdowns
- Repetitive noises/sounds/behaviours
As parents and teacher, we need to teach our children how to self-regulate their own anxiety.
We need to teach them strategies to calm themselves, seeking a break/time out.
Sometimes we give our children visual cards because when they are anxious it can be difficult to communicate their concerns or that they need a break.
Breaks might include:
- A quiet area
- A chewy toy/treat/gum
- Listening to music
- Headphones to alleviate noise
- Reading a book
- Playing a game
- An ipad
- Movement breaks
- A wall pushup
- Deep breaths
- Counting to 10 or further
- Meditation
- Having a drink
- Carrying something heavy
- Mini-trampoline
- Exercise ball
- Star jumps
- Running/walking
- Running an errand
- Retreating to a safe place
- Sitting away from others
- Sharing a joke
- Talking to a friend
- Playing with a friend
