Principal Talk with Mrs Lowe
The School Explorers
Over the past few weeks, our pre-school friends have been visiting each Friday afternoon to participate in The School Explorers, our school readiness program.
So far the children have participated in music and dancing, mathematics, science and educational technology tasks.
We look forward to The School Explorer’s Program continuing next term in Week 2 on 2 August.
School Reports
Tomorrow you will receive your child's Semester One Progress Report and Evidence of Learning Folder.
You will notice the Progress Reports for children in Years One - Year Six use an A to E grade scale.
The scale describes:
- the depth of knowledge and understanding, and
- the range of skills that students working at that standard typically show.
Grades are given for individual achievement. Students will get the grade that best matches the standard of their achievement.
Grades are one aspect of school reporting to parents. Other important tools include:
- teacher comments
- parent-teacher interviews and
- information about student effort and application.
About the Common Grade Scale
The Common Grade Scale shown below is used to report student achievement in both primary and junior secondary years in all NSW schools.
The Common Grade Scale describes performance at each of five grade levels.
A |
The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations. |
B |
The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations. |
C |
The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills. |
D |
The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills. |
E |
The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the content and has achieved very limited competence in some of the processes and skills. |
At any point, teachers can look at what the students have been learning and how well they have achieved.
This means that at any time they can:
- compare student achievement with the standards represented by each grade, and
- make an on-balance professional judgement and give the appropriate grade.
An informative document that accompanies your child's Progress Report is the Evidence of Learning Folder. This folio contains work samples taken from a variety of learning areas across the semester. There will be a variety of draft and published pieces that illustrate your child’s everyday work standards.
If you have any questions about either of these progress documents please make an appointment to see your child’s classroom teacher.
