Catholic Leaders Retreat
Last week I joined the Archdiocesan Principals at a Conference and Retreat in the Southern Highlands. Through attending this I gained many insights into my new role and the networks I am creating are assisting me to feel supported and encouraged. The highlight of the Retreat was meeting and listening to Father Timothy Radcliffe OP.
Fr Timothy is a distinguished figure within the Catholic Church, acclaimed for his profound contributions as both an English Catholic priest and a Dominican friar. Most recently he was chosen by Pope Francis to lead the pre-Synod Retreat and provide regular reflections for members during the Synod. His reflections and thought challenges prompted me to reflect on my relationships and experiences as a teacher and leader. One concept that struck me was our relationships and interactions with each other. Howe often do we take the time to truly listen to another's perspective. Imagine what we could learn if we would only take the time to truly connect adn to aim to understand rather than purely respond or react.
“Conversation needs an imaginative leap into the experience of the other person,” explained Radcliffe. “To see with their eyes, and hear with their ears. We need to get inside their skin. From what experiences do their words spring? What pain or hope do they carry? What journey are they on?”
This conversation leads to understanding, respect and love.
